Hello, and welcome to the Peter Street Cabinetry blog. We are so glad you found us.

My name is Susan, and together with my daughter Victoria, I've spent more than 35 years helping homeowners across Port Hope, Cobourg, Northumberland, and the surrounding region create kitchens and living spaces they truly love. We are passionate about design — about the way a well-built kitchen can change how a family lives, or the way a custom closet can bring calm to a chaotic morning routine.

This blog is our space to share that passion with you. Whether you're in the early stages of dreaming about a renovation, or you've already pulled up the flooring and you're ready to go, we hope you'll find something here that inspires you, helps you make better decisions, and makes the whole process feel a little less daunting.

Who We Are

Peter Street Cabinetry is a family-owned cabinet maker based at 104 Peter Street in Port Hope, Ontario. We've been in business for over 35 years, and in that time we've helped hundreds of homeowners transform their kitchens, bathrooms, closets, home offices, and more.

What makes us different is straightforward: we manufacture everything in-house. Every cabinet, every door, every drawer front is built right here in our Ontario workshop — not outsourced, not pulled from a catalogue. That means we control the quality of every single piece, and we can build to any size, any style, and any finish you can imagine.

"The kitchen is the heart of the home — and it should be designed as such. That's the philosophy we bring to every single project."

We offer a full range of custom cabinetry services — from custom kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities to closets and wardrobes, home offices, laundry rooms and mudrooms, countertops, and cabinet door refacing. We also work closely with builders, contractors, and interior designers through our trade program.

What This Blog Is About

Over the coming months we'll be sharing practical advice, design inspiration, and honest answers to the questions we hear most often from homeowners. Here's a taste of what's coming:

  • Kitchen design tips — from choosing the right door style to maximizing storage in a smaller kitchen
  • Refacing vs. replacing — how to know which option makes sense for your situation and your budget
  • Colour and finish trends — what's popular right now, what's timeless, and how to choose with confidence
  • Behind the scenes at our workshop — how we actually build your cabinets and what makes custom quality different
  • Real projects — before and after stories from homeowners we've worked with across Northumberland and beyond
  • Budget-friendly ideas — because beautiful design doesn't have to break the bank

Great Design Doesn't Have to Break the Bank

One of the things we hear most often from new clients is some version of this: "I'd love to have a beautiful kitchen, but I'm worried it's going to cost more than I can afford."

We understand that concern completely — and we want to address it directly. Yes, custom cabinetry is a real investment. But it's not always as far out of reach as people assume, and there are almost always smart ways to stretch a budget further than you'd expect.

Sometimes that means choosing a stunning painted finish instead of a more expensive wood species. Sometimes it means refacing your existing cabinet doors rather than replacing the whole kitchen. Sometimes it means phasing a project — doing the kitchen now and the mudroom next year.

Whatever your situation, we'll always be honest with you about what's possible and what makes financial sense. Our goal is never to upsell you on things you don't need. It's to help you get the result you actually want, at a price that works for your life.

Your Home Should Feel Like Yours

Beyond the practical side of things, we believe deeply that your home should reflect who you are. It should support the way your family lives, and make you genuinely happy to walk through the front door every day.

That might mean bold navy cabinetry with brass hardware and a dramatic waterfall island. Or it might mean clean white shakers, quartz countertops, and a sense of calm simplicity. There's no right or wrong answer — there's only what feels right for you.

Part of what we love most about this work is that design conversation. Sitting down with a homeowner, understanding what they dream about, figuring out how to make it real within their space and budget — that's where the magic happens. And it's a conversation we'd genuinely love to have with you.

Let's Build Something Beautiful Together
