Frequently Asked Questions
With over 35 years of experience, we've heard just about every question a homeowner can ask about custom cabinetry. Here are the answers to the ones we get most often. Don't see yours? Give us a call at 289-222-0272 — we're happy to help.
Getting Started
The easiest way to get started is to fill out our free estimate form or give us a call at 289-222-0272. We'll arrange a free, no-obligation in-home consultation where we visit your space, take measurements, and talk through your vision, budget, and timeline. There's no pressure and no commitment required at that stage.
Yes — always. We provide free, no-obligation in-home estimates for every project. We visit your space, understand what you're looking for, and give you a detailed quote tailored to your specific requirements. You're never pressured to commit on the spot.
We are based in Port Hope, Ontario and serve homeowners across a wide region — including Cobourg, Northumberland County, Clarington, Oshawa, Durham Region, Pickering, and east to Kingston. If you're not sure whether we cover your area, just give us a call and we'll let you know.
Absolutely — we encourage it. Our Port Hope showroom lets you see and feel door styles, finishes, and hardware options in person before making any decisions. Showroom visits are by appointment. Contact us to arrange a time that works for you.
Custom Cabinets
For most homeowners, absolutely yes. Custom cabinets are built to fit your exact space — no fillers, no awkward gaps, no compromises. You choose the door style, finish, hardware, and interior layout, and every cabinet is built to your precise measurements. The result is a kitchen or bathroom that looks and functions better than anything off the shelf, and is built to last decades rather than years.
When you factor in the longevity and the value they add to your home, custom cabinets are one of the smartest investments you can make.
Semi-custom cabinets are built in standard sizes with limited options for finishes and door styles — they're a step up from stock cabinets but still constrained by manufacturer sizing and options.
Fully custom cabinets, like the ones we build at Peter Street Cabinetry, are made to the exact dimensions of your space with complete freedom over every detail — door style, finish colour, hardware, interior fittings, and more. Because we manufacture everything in-house at our Port Hope workshop, there are no catalogue limitations.
Every project is different, so pricing depends on the size of your space, the materials you choose, the door style and finish, and the complexity of the design. We provide a detailed, itemized quote after your free in-home consultation — there are no hidden fees and no surprises.
What we can say is that we work with a wide range of budgets and will always be upfront with you about costs. Our goal is to find the best possible solution for your space and your budget.
Yes — we are proudly Canadian. Every cabinet we build is manufactured in-house at our Port Hope, Ontario workshop using premium quality materials. We use durable hardwoods, high-quality plywood box construction, and premium finishes that are built to withstand years of daily use and still look beautiful.
Because we build everything ourselves, we control the quality of every single component — from the raw material to the finished piece.
Absolutely — that's the whole point of custom. You have complete control over your door style (shaker, flat slab, raised panel, and more), your finish (painted, stained, wood grain, two-tone), and your hardware (knobs, pulls, hinges in a wide range of finishes). Our designers will guide you through every choice to make sure everything works beautifully together.

Timelines vary depending on the size and complexity of your project. As a general guide, most custom kitchen projects take several weeks from design approval to installation. Smaller projects like bathroom vanities, closets, or mudrooms are typically faster.
We'll give you a clear, realistic timeline during your consultation and keep you updated throughout the process. Because we manufacture everything in-house, we have more control over timelines than companies that rely on outside suppliers.
Cabinet Door Refacing
Cabinet refacing means replacing your existing cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and hardware — while keeping your existing cabinet boxes in place. We also apply a matching veneer to the visible cabinet frames so the entire kitchen looks completely new.
The result is a dramatic transformation at a fraction of the cost and disruption of a full kitchen replacement.
Refacing typically costs significantly less than a full cabinet replacement — in many cases up to 50% less. You're not paying for new cabinet boxes, installation of new carcasses, or the disruption of removing existing cabinetry. The new doors, drawer fronts, veneer, and hardware are all manufactured in-house at our Port Hope workshop, so you're still getting custom quality at a much lower cost.
The best candidates for refacing are cabinets where the layout works well for you and the cabinet boxes themselves are structurally sound — no water damage, no warping, and hinges still functioning properly. If you're happy with where everything is but just hate how it looks, refacing is likely an excellent option.
We'll assess your cabinets during your free consultation and give you an honest recommendation on whether refacing or full replacement makes more sense for your situation.
Most refacing projects are completed in just two to four days. There's no demolition, no mess, and no weeks of living without a functional kitchen. Our team installs your new doors, applies veneer to the frames, fits your new hardware, and leaves everything clean and ready to use.
Countertops
We supply and install countertops in quartz, granite, and laminate. Quartz is our most popular choice — it's non-porous, stain-resistant, and available in hundreds of colours and patterns including dramatic marble-look designs. Granite is a beautiful natural stone option with excellent durability. Laminate has come a long way and offers realistic stone and wood looks at a budget-friendly price point.
We can walk you through all the options during your consultation and show you samples in our showroom.
Both. We can supply and install a countertop as part of a full kitchen or bathroom project, or as a standalone upgrade if you just want to refresh your existing surface. We template on-site, fabricate to fit your exact space, and handle the full installation including sink and faucet cutouts.
Process & Installation
Yes — it's all us, from start to finish. Our designers create your layout, our workshop builds every cabinet in-house, and our own installation team handles delivery and fitting. We don't use subcontractors or outsource manufacturing. That means consistent quality, clear communication, and one team accountable for the entire project.
Yes. Our designers create detailed plans and 3D renderings of your project so you can see exactly what your new kitchen, bathroom, or space will look like before we cut a single piece of material. Nothing goes into production until you're completely happy with the design.
We do a thorough walkthrough with you before we consider the job complete — adjusting doors, checking alignment, and making sure every detail is right. If something isn't to your satisfaction, we address it. We've been in this business for over 35 years and our reputation is built on customers who are genuinely happy with the result.
Yes — we work with both homeowners and trade professionals including custom home builders, general contractors, renovation companies, and interior designers. Absolutely. We build custom home office cabinetry — including built-in desks, floor-to-ceiling shelving, and integrated storage — as well as custom laundry rooms and mudrooms with folding counters, bench seating, cubbies, and smart cabinet storage. The same quality and craftsmanship goes into every room we work on.
We're a family-owned cabinet maker based right here in Port Hope with over 35 years of experience serving homeowners across Northumberland, Durham Region, and the GTA. Everything we build is manufactured in-house — which means better quality control, faster turnaround, and a team that takes personal pride in every project.
We're not a franchise, not a big box store, and not a company that outsources to overseas suppliers. We're your neighbours, and we stand behind every piece of cabinetry we deliver. Come meet us in person — we'd love to show you what we do.
