Designing for Real Life: How to Plan a Kitchen That Actually Works for Your Family
We live in a world of perfectly staged Instagram kitchens, glossy magazine spreads, and social media influencers showcasing homes that look like they've never been cooked in. It's easy to get swept up in it all — and before you know it, you're planning a renovation around how a space looks rather than how it actually lives.
At Peter Street Cabinetry, we've been designing and building custom kitchens in Port Hope and across Northumberland for over 35 years. And one of the most important conversations we have with every client is this: before we talk about finishes and door styles, let's talk about how you actually use your kitchen.
Start With the Questions That Matter Most
Before you scroll through Pinterest or visit a showroom, sit down and think honestly about your household. Every family has a different rhythm, and your kitchen should be designed around yours — not someone else's.
Ask yourself:
- Is your kitchen where the kids do homework while you cook dinner?
- Do you host large family gatherings where you need serious seating?
- Is one person usually cooking, or does everyone end up in the kitchen at once?
- Do you bake regularly and need dedicated counter space that stays clear?
- Is clutter on the countertops a constant battle you want to solve?
- Do you need a space where kids can hang out without being underfoot?
The answers to these questions should shape your design just as much as your aesthetic preferences do. A kitchen that photographs beautifully but frustrates you every single day is not a successful renovation.

A Personal Example: Our Own Kitchen Renovation
When we renovated the kitchen in our own home, we had several non-negotiable goals that drove every design decision we made — and very few of them were about aesthetics.
The biggest priority was the island. We wanted it as long as possible. Not for cooking or washing dishes — but for living. We wanted the kids to be able to spread out and do homework while dinner was being made. We wanted space for family game nights. We wanted enough seating that when family and friends visited, nobody was awkwardly hovering without somewhere to sit.
A long island designed around family life — seating, homework space, and room to spread out.
To make that work, we moved the sink to the main wall. In many kitchen designs, the sink goes on the island — but for us, that would have eaten up valuable surface area. By keeping the sink off the island, we gave ourselves more usable space for everything that wasn't cooking or dish-washing.
Solving the Storage Problem Once and For All
The other major challenge our kitchen had before the renovation was storage — or more accurately, the lack of it. Countertops were perpetually cluttered. Things had nowhere to live except on the surface, which made the space feel chaotic and small.
Our solution was to extend the kitchen cabinetry along the entire length of the available wall space and install three separate pantry cabinets. This was a deliberate choice to maximize storage and get as much off the counters as possible.
The result was transformative. Countertops stay clear. Everything has a dedicated home. The kitchen feels larger and calmer. And the kids have genuinely claimed it as their space — they come in to do homework, charge their devices, and hang out, without feeling like they're in the way.
Storage Questions to Ask Before You Renovate
- What appliances currently live on your countertops that you'd rather hide?
- Do you have enough pantry storage, or does everything end up on the counter?
- Where do you actually put things when you're done with them?
- Do you need a dedicated spot for kids' items, charging cables, or schoolwork?
- Would pull-out shelves or drawer organizers solve problems you currently live with?
Finding the Balance Between Beauty and Function
None of this means you have to choose between a kitchen that looks stunning and one that works for your family. The best kitchen designs do both — and that's exactly what a well-planned custom cabinetry project delivers.
The key is being honest about your priorities before you start making design decisions. When you know what you need the space to do, it becomes much easier to make smart choices about layout, storage, island size, and all the details that follow.
A good designer will help you get there. At Peter Street Cabinetry, our design consultations start with a genuine conversation about how you live — not just how you want things to look. We'll help you find the layout that solves your real problems while still achieving the aesthetic you love.
What to Expect From Your Design Consultation
If you're planning a kitchen renovation and feeling uncertain about where to start, a professional design consultation is the single best first step you can take. Here's what you can expect when you work with our team:
- We listen first. Before we talk about finishes or door styles, we ask about your family, your routines, your frustrations with your current space, and what you wish it could do better.
- We measure everything. Accurate measurements mean a design that uses every inch of your space as effectively as possible — no fillers, no wasted corners.
- We show you what's possible. Our designers create 3D renderings of your space so you can see exactly what it will look like before we build anything.
- We're honest about trade-offs. Sometimes what you want and what your space allows require compromise. We'll always be upfront about the options, the costs, and the functional implications of every decision.
It's completely normal to feel uncertain about the possibilities for your space — that's exactly what we're here for. Whether you have a clear vision or no idea where to start, our team will guide you through the process and make sure the end result is a kitchen your family will love living in every single day.
